What drives the cost of a corrugated box
Almost every argument about carton pricing comes down to one number: how many kilograms of paper go into the box. Everything else — conversion, printing, labour, margin — is easier to agree on and easier to change. Paper is usually 60–75% of the cost of a plain shipping carton, so a costing that gets the board weight wrong is wrong overall, no matter how carefully the overheads were built up.

Where the app goes further is the step after costing: matching the blank to the reel widths you actually stock. Two boards with identical paper cost on paper can differ by 8% in real consumption purely because one fits the reel and the other leaves a strip of trim on every run.
A note on rates
The single most common costing error is quoting against an average paper rate months after the market moved. If your last purchase was materially above your running average, quoting at the average quietly sells the box below replacement cost. Frequently asked questions
How is the cost of a corrugated box calculated?
A carton's paper cost is the weight of board it consumes multiplied by what you paid for that paper. The board weight comes from three things: the area of the flat blank the box is cut from, the GSM of each sheet in the ply stack, and the extra paper the fluted layers consume because the corrugation wave is longer than the flat sheet it sits between. Multiply the resulting kilograms by your rate per kilogram for each grade and you have the paper cost. Conversion, printing, labour and overhead sit on top of that.
What is GSM and why does it change my cost?
GSM is grams per square metre — the weight of one square metre of that paper. Because paper is bought by weight and consumed by area, GSM is the bridge between the two. Moving an outer liner from 120 GSM to 140 GSM adds roughly 17% to that sheet's weight and therefore 17% to its cost, with no change to the box's dimensions.
Why does a medium sheet weigh more than a liner of the same GSM?
The medium is corrugated, so it travels a wavy path between two flat liners. A fluted sheet consumes more running length than the board it forms — how much more depends on the flute profile. This calculator applies the standard take-up factor for the flute you select, which is why an A-flute board costs noticeably more paper than an E-flute board of identical dimensions.
What is the difference between 3-ply, 5-ply and 7-ply?
Ply counts the sheets in the board. A 3-ply (single wall) board is two liners with one fluting medium between them. A 5-ply (double wall) board is three liners with two mediums, and 7-ply (triple wall) is four liners with three mediums. Liners and mediums always alternate, and the stack always starts and ends with a liner. More ply means more strength and more paper.
Which flute should I choose?
C-flute is the general-purpose default for most shipping cartons. B-flute is flatter and gives better crush resistance for canned and bottled goods. A-flute gives the most cushioning for fragile items. E and F flutes are thin and take fine print, so they suit retail and cosmetic cartons. For heavy or export cartons, double-wall BC is the usual choice.
